Macuti Miquejo, a coastal neighborhood in Beira, has experienced exponential growth in recent years, often lacking an adequate urban development plan. This unplanned expansion has resulted in issues such as overcrowding and a lack of essential infrastructure and services. The MUDAR project aims to address these challenges by developing a neighborhood improvement plan and implementing integrated redevelopment initiatives. These actions are carried out with the direct involvement of the local population and neighborhood authorities to identify the most urgent needs and find effective solutions.
Redevelopment Initiatives
The redevelopment work began last June and includes the rehabilitation of 800 meters of road, the construction of two retention basins, and the creation of a public park. The total investment exceeds €400,000, and the work is expected to be completed by February 2025.
The road rehabilitation has been made possible thanks to the active collaboration of the Macuti community, allowing structural interventions within a densely populated and urbanized space. During the initial phase, the road’s route was excavated, followed by the placement and compaction of structural layers. The final phase, currently underway, involves paving the road with cement block pavers. The new road will significantly improve mobility, enabling the passage of public and private vehicles, introducing new services such as waste collection, and ensuring access for emergency vehicles.
Retention Basins
The two retention basins were designed to mitigate the effects of annual flooding that affects the Macuti Miquejo neighborhood, exacerbated by the area’s morphological characteristics. These basins will retain a portion of rainfall and gradually drain the accumulated water through the city’s drainage channels, helping to reduce the damage caused by heavy rains.
Urban Greening Promotion
In addition to infrastructure improvements, the project focuses on promoting urban greening. Twenty local youth have participated in the creation of a community nursery, engaging in plant production to support the expansion of green spaces in the neighborhood. In December, the first tree-planting campaign was launched, resulting in the planting of over 100 trees of various species in different areas of the neighborhood. By the end of the project, more than 500 trees are expected to be planted, with the goal of ensuring the initiative’s continuity through the management of the nursery by local youth.
Creation of a Recreational Area
Another key component of the project is the development of a recreational area. Since July, a building has been constructed to house a small refreshment kiosk, which will be managed through a public-private partnership to ensure its economic sustainability, as well as a public restroom. Some finishing touches are still underway, along with the installation of playground equipment for children.
Conclusion and Future Outlook
All works are scheduled to be completed and inaugurated by March 2025. These initiatives not only enhance the quality of life for residents of Macuti Miquejo but also lay the foundation for sustainable and participatory urban development, promoting the well-being of the local community and fostering greater environmental balance.
