The MUDAR project, now in its third and final year, has achieved significant progress in recent months, with tangible results across its main focus areas: capacity building, the Macuti pilot project, digitization initiatives, and public-private partnerships.
Training and Capacity Building
In the training sector, the third cycle for CMB personnel was successfully completed. Shortly after, the fourth cycle began, titled “Promoting socio-economic development: synergies between public, private, and citizenship.” This cycle follows the well-established “Training of Trainers” approach, aiming to prepare trainers from IFAPA (Mozambique’s Public Training Institute), who will then pass on the knowledge to the Municipality of Beira staff.
The Macuti Pilot Project
In the coastal neighborhood of Macuti, infrastructure work is in full swing. As detailed in this article, recent months have seen the start of several planned activities: the construction of a road traversing the neighborhood, drainage works, the creation of a small public park, and the planting of trees in various areas.
Meanwhile, the University of Trento’s Department of Civil, Environmental, and Mechanical Engineering, in collaboration with Zambeze University, is preparing a comparative study on this pilot project. The study analyzes data collected during the planning and construction phases and will help monitor the long-term impact of the interventions on the local community.
Digitization
Another fundamental pillar of the project is digitization. Following a needs assessment at the Municipality of Beira, the project team—comprising Informatici Senza Frontiere, Comunika, and the Municipality of Beira—has begun developing an integrated digital platform. This platform aims to improve the management and communication of urban waste issues and other services by consolidating data from MOPA (an existing system) and enabling real-time SMS communication with citizens based on their zones.
Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs)
Two significant public-private partnerships have also been launched:
- Waste Management: A partnership with a local association provides waste collection services in Macuti and manages an Eco-point for sorting and selling recyclable materials.
- Green Spaces Management: The Municipality of Beira has assigned the management of green spaces to a municipal company, which will subcontract the maintenance of Macuti’s park to a local business. The business will also operate the park’s café in exchange for maintaining the green area.
Project Achievements and Future Steps
To date, we are proud to report that the MUDAR project is demonstrating concrete progress in various areas, from infrastructure development to environmental sustainability and service digitization. The collaboration between public and private sectors is showcasing how local resources can be leveraged to improve the quality of life for Beira’s citizens, with a long-term vision for urban development and efficient city service management.
Stories from Beira: podcast and multimedia exhibition
In recent months, the MUDAR podcast, titled Killed Me Now, was finalized and published on major streaming platforms, as detailed in this article. Additionally, we are organizing a multimedia exhibition in both Trento and Beira, which will showcase the daily life of Macuti through photos and a soundscape. The exhibition will be initially held in Trento at Torre Mirana on Via Belenzani from April 1 to 13. The dates of the exhibition in Beira will be decided soon.
